RHS Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Each year the AGM enables RHS members to find out what has been achieved over the past year and to have a say in future developments

About the RHS Annual General Meeting

The 2024 RHS Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place at RHS Harlow Carr, North Yorkshire on Wednesday 10 July 2024 starting at 11am. Refreshments were available to members from 10.30am. Following the AGM, pre-bookable tours of the garden, Kitchen Garden and Alpine House were open to members (see information in the Notice).

The full Notice of the AGM (1MB pdf) detailed all business to be dealt with before, during and after the AGM, including the election of the RHS President, Treasurer and voting on the election of members to RHS Council. Information on the candidates who stood for election to RHS Council and their statements are available in the Notice.

RHS Council elections process

The RHS Governance and People Committee leads the annual election process to the RHS Council. The Committee reviews the applications of all candidates who apply to stand with the support of the RHS Council and interviews a shortlist of candidates. Following a skills audit of current trustees, the Committee considers the skills and experience required and makes recommendations for selected candidates for election to the RHS Council.

The Committee is considering the required skills and experience for the RHS Council in 2025 and will share further details in September 2024.

Results of the RHS Council election 2024

Each year, as part of the running of the RHS, at least three RHS Council members retire. The resulting vacancies are filled by election at the RHS Annual General Meeting (AGM).

In 2024, there were four validly nominated candidates for three vacancies and an election was held and managed independently by Civica Election Services.

A total of 1,583 valid votes were cast by RHS members online and in person at the AGM.

Voting results shared by Civica Election Services:

  • Liz Nicholson: 1,289
  • Nick Dunn: 1,229
  • Ruth Willmott: 1,117
  • Adrian Penrose: 683

Nick Dunn, Liz Nicholson, and Ruth Willmott were therefore duly elected as Ordinary Members of the RHS Council until the end of the RHS AGM in 2029.
